Howell papers, 1855-1974.

Chiefly correspondence and photographs, 1855-1869, documenting Howell's early life, student days at Amherst College, and military service in the 31st Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers during the Civil War. Correspondence includes letters to and from Luther Clark Howell, his family members and friends. Civil War letters describe battles, forts, and travel during the Civil War. Photographs include portraits of Civil War officers and Amherst College classmates.

Howell, Luther Clark, 1835-1866

Luther Clark Howell, son of Jeremiah and Asenoth Everts Howell, was born in Big Flats, New York on February 25, 1835. He attended Alfred Academy in New York State and then entered Amherst College in 1861 with the Class of 1864. On October 9, 1861, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, Co. D, 31st Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on November 20, 1862, and became Captain of his company on December 4, 1863.
